Thanks everyone for coming out last night! It was our best turnout since we’ve restarted PLGNA a little less than a year ago.

I want to thank the following folks for helping us put this together —

PLGNA General Meeting, Monday May 17, 2010

The next PLGNA General Meeting will take place Monday, May 17 at the Grace Reformed Church of Flatbush, located at the corner of Lincoln Road and Bedford Avenue. The meeting will begin at 7 PM.

The meeting will include presentations on:

Prospect Park’s Lakeside Project that will renovate the skating rink and the surrounding area and create a new park entrance at Lincoln Road.
An update on efforts to create a “Litter-Free PLG,” a project that arose from a conversation on the Lefferts Yahoo listserve!
PLGNA committees working to make affect housing, quality of life and safety issues in the neighborhood.
Proposed amendments to PLGNA’s bylaws.

We’ll also have information on a new Brooklyn Botanical Gardens training program combining gardening and community organizing and other issues of concern for our neighborhood.
There will many chances for members to ask questions, find ways to get involved and make community-related announcements.
PLGNA is for EVERYONE who lives, works or operates a business in our community. We hope you can attend and bring a neighbor so our membership continues to grow. Please share the attached flier with someone or post it in your building.

Sadly, in this day, there are schools that do not have libraries.

ReadThis and The Center for Fiction are holding a very special event on April 10th to celebrate reading and raise books for NYC schools.

To donate books, please stop by Kdog Cafe(43 Lincoln rd) and drop off new and gently used books.

ReadThis is a non-profit organization that promotes reading and gets books to those who need them.

Housing Committee Screening of FUREE Film, Saturday March 13

Date: March 13 (Saturday) from 4pm - 6pm at Church of the Evangel (1950 Bedford Ave, corner of bedford and hawthorne)

We will be screening “Some Place Like Home” - a film made by Families United for Racial and Economic Equality (FUREE) and having a discussion about housing issues in PLG as a step toward a broader organizing effort.

About the Film (via furee)

Some Place Like Home tells the stories of community residents and small businesses that are displaced to make way for high-end retail and luxury condominiums to the area. It depicts the pulling out of Downtown Brooklyn and Fort Greene’s legacy of being a once-forgotten neighborhood built from the ground up by generations of low-income and working families from all walks of life. Small business owners that have helped to make the area the 3rd largest retail district in New York City talk about the deferment of their dreams as entrepreneurs. It reveals practices and policies used to support massive real estate projects as the historical, economic and cultural fabric of the area is torn apart. It follows the battle of community residents and small businesses as they fight for some place like home.

Working with PLGNA Series - Sterling Street Block Association

In the second installment of “Working with PLGNA”, we talk to Candida Brooks-Harrison. She’s the Secretary for the Sterling Street Block Association between Washington and Bedford. Candida is also an active member of the PLGNA board.

Sterling Street Block Association is the longest, continuously running block association in PLG with 54 prosperous and challenging years.

Happy New Year!

We’ve been very busy working out important details to get the organization up and fully operational. Once all this is out of the way, we plan to reach out to many of you for your suggestions and help with projects and committees.

Below is an abridged version of the original minutes.

Election of Officers

The board elected the following officers:

Martin Ruiz as President
Rodne Alteon as Vice President
Dynishal Gross as Secretary
Barbara Rogers as Treasurer

Commitees

Board will meet monthly

The following committees were formed

Tenants’ Committee: Deborah, Darren, Bob
Safety/Quality of Life Committee: Gary, Quest, Barbara, Dynishal
Youth Committee: Rodne, Nelson, Lisa, Deborah, Candida, Wayne, Doug
Communications/Block Associations: Candida, Rodne, Dynishal, Martin, Gary

General Membership Meetings

3 general meetings will be held per year. Historically, there’s been only one.

Review of By-laws

Wayne will lead a committee to review the by-laws. Committee includes Martin Ruiz, Dynishal Gross, and Rodne Alteon. The committee will consider lowering the age limit.

Bank Account

Barbara Rogers will open an account with Astoria Bank.

PLGNA representation at community meetings

PLGNA will try to send a board representative to community meetings. PLGNA will also publish and maintain a public calendar of all community meetings.

Dear PLGNA Members and Friends,

The PLGNA Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the Annual Meeting will be held Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 7:00 PM in the Grace Reformed Church Sanctuary at 155 Lincoln Road (corner of Bedford Ave).

At the meeting, we will confirm and elect the Board of Directors, outline ongoing activities, and introduce exciting and essential programming and organizational initiatives that the Board of Directors have been planning throughout the Summer and Fall. The meeting is open only to members, though anyone living within the PLGNA boundaries (Empire Blvd to Clarkson Ave; Ocean Ave to New York Ave) is welcome to join the night of the meeting. Dues are $5.

PLGNA Elects Board of Directors

On Thursday, May 28, PLGNA completed the process of electing a provisional Board of Directors. The meeting, which ended with a discussion of short- and long-term plans for the 40-year-old organization, is the third that PLGNA has held in the past three months. Official elections will take place at the Annual Meeting, to be held this fall.
